Doctoral thesis: Cryomilled group IV elements (Silicon & Germanium) for opto-electronic applications

Synthesis of contamination-free nanoparticles of elemental semiconductors Si & Ge in bulk quantity becomes an important aspect. The indigenously developed cryomill setup has been used to synthesize p-type and n-type Si NPs. Doped Si NPs are employed in organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells to show improved efficiency. Polycrystalline nature milled NPs has been revealed and a one-step simple etching process has been proposed to obtain the nanocrystals, which showed PL in UV range with 17% yield. Size-selective functionalization has been employed to obtain Si ink. Similarly, Ge ink has been synthesized and successfully employed in inkjet printed diode fabrication. Si nanocrystals have also been utilized as a charge-trapping material in semiconducting device.
